I suppose I should be happy with the success of iTunes downloads - it's done pretty much what I thought music fans would want, but there's something niggly about iTunes that I can't quite put my finger on. I guess anyone who leads a market by so far will always get more than their fair share of criticism, but there's something quite annoying about the fact that iTunes is a pretty decent music player, the iTunes shop has lots of music in it, but if I bought any of it, I wouldn't be able to listen to any of it on my walkman. I slightly resent the message that I ought to only use my iPod if I know what's good for me.

Getting back to the title of the post, sure enough, Apple has provided the world with over one billion tracks from the iTunes Music Store. Well done to the spotty adolescent kid who downloaded the billionth track. Sure, it was a tragic download, but I can guarantee he will get more enjoyment out of the iMac than the Coldplay track (that is unless he's another Windows drone who will probably sell the iMac to fund an upgrade to the sound or graphics card in his PC to something the manufacturer should have installed in the first place). I wonder if he will have to leave the comfort and safety of his bedroom in order to collect his prize or whether the USPS will deliver it all?

BTW, Chris "I'm more cheerful than Morrisey" Martin bears an uncanny resemblance to Dr. Calum Byrom in the picture above. Cal, is there something you're not telling us?

I read with interest the other day that Microsoft is gearing up to launch another online music download service in competition with Apple's iTunes. Presumably, it will only allow the downloading of WMA (Weird Microsoft Audio) format files. Good luck, Bill.
