Over at the Internet Texas Holdem forum we have a Limit Hand Examples forum where players can post hands they’ve played for comment. To make hands more readable than they come in when you request them from poker sites, there are a couple of hand converters floating around the web that will parse the history and output something more legible.
While I’ve been playing at Holdempoker for the past month or so, I’ve found that none of the converters I’ve used in the past could work with the hand histories from holdempoker, so I decided to set about writing my own.
I decided that I could also use this as a programming exercise, so I’m busy learning enough PHP to parse the hand history text files and convert them to lovely readable hand examples. This way I get to learn something new, and I can host it here if I ever feel it’s ready. It’s just occurred to me as well that it needn’t be that hard to do something a little fancy and code some sort of hand replayer…
Anyhoo, several frustrating coding sessions later, and I’ve got to the position where I can convert hands from holdempoker, Party Poker, and Poker Stars (with a few glitches here and there - I haven’t coded in what happens when players go all-in yet, and I’m working on coping with anyone posting a blind other than SB and BB at the moment, but other than that it all works fairly seamlessly).
I’ll post more when I put a page together for the converter, but I’m optimistic that I can expand it out to cover pretty much any site that offers hand histories.
And after that all I have to do is code for NL and PL games… and then if I’m feeling adventurous, maybe some Omaha, but that’s a long way down the line the way things are going.
